He is Ryoma Sakamoto, also known as the most popular hero of Japanese history. The largeness of his popularity can be known from the fact that the drama of his life broadcast again and again, now on NHK his story is broadcasting. He is believed he was the miracle politician in Japan. However, I don’t think so because of following two reasons. First his character that we very know was created by Ryotaro Shiba a famous novelist. And second, he didn’t have many achievement. There were many great persons in Japan at that time because the era was tumultuous time. I think his achievement was small compared with other persons, it was only establishing the alliance between Satsuma and Choshu. He was killed early without fulfilling his life ambition, so he could not do any other thing.
However, I respect him because it was true that he fought for future of Japan at the risk of his life. He seemed to be very strong with his sword, he was a real samurai. On the other hand he had a gun made by Smith & Wesson, in fact he was smart enough to absorb other country’s culture. I must learn many thing from him.

Now is the time of reforming Japan. The political party which ruled Japan for more than 50 years had been turned over, economic ideology which had been based on long time have been waving and the black ships like Google or Apple had made a business platform that they can dominate with their power.
The situation is very similar to the one of the end of Edo era and Meiji Restoration. In that period, Japan faced crisis of national independence. However, there were many skillful and valuable persons in Japan and they worked very very hard for Japan with no regard for their own personal safe, so Japan managed to keep its independency. In this period, we must unite and fight for our future. If we can’t, Japan would not have bright future.
I respect and be proud of them. I want to learn something from their history and life.

Means to oppose the pirates

Today Japanese whale catcher boat was attacked by pirates named Sea shepherd and the boat’s crews were wounded. Now I don’t want to discuss about whaling issues, but how Japan will react against the pirates. Japanese whaling does not exceed the limitation of international law, but their performance clearly broke it. However, Japan’s boat did not counter emotionally. I evaluate this patience. It is because their attack was completely provocation, so the boat should not overreact. I think Japanese ministry have to do forceful action. Appeal only with words has no power to them, we studied it form their past action. However, regrettably Japan is in the situation that the forces can’t preempt attack. Therefore, Japanese ministry have to think means to oppose them.

To make a tool

I think the distinctiveness of human beings to other animals is to use a tool. You know, in the Kubrick movie, 2001 A Space Odyssey, a monkey suddenly use a bone as a tool of striking others by the effectiveness of the black monolith. It indicates speciality and superiority of using a tool. If using a tool has specific mean, making a tool may have special meanings for us. Considering so, design seems to have a role like the black monolith.

Now is the Season of pollenosis?

In Japan, when it gets warm an enormous number of pollen of cedar wander in the air. It is still February, but I feel symptom of pollenosis. After that, I started to think about pollenosis.
Pollenosis is a kind of allergy. Old Japanese planted many many cedar a long time ago, so pollenosis almost means allergy of cedar’s pollen in Japan. Now that it is called national affliction of Japan. It is merely pollen, but many people are suffering from it.
I think all human being is weak to endure the changing environment after thinking about pollen. There is only slight change for us in growing up the numbers of pollen, however human beings react hypersensitivity. It may be that our gene do not have arrangement of changing environment.

What will happen about North Korea?

North Korea announced odd statements. It is merely intimidation without reason but it is threat for us in another way. It is because North Korea is in very harsh conditions. I don’t know their actual condition but I can estimate it by the facts of their diplomatic policy and the information leaked from fire wall. In other words, their statements are metaphor of other threats, for example their suicide attack because of self-abandoned, many boat people or third time atomic bomb in the worst case. I don’t want to decide a simple answer “Arm the military!”, but I strongly think that Japan needs to take an proper action with clear vision.

What is the nation? What is the nationality?

There is a discussion to give a suffrage for permanent foreign residents in Japan. I can’t believe the existence of this discussion. Suffrage is the most basic right of nationality. Where is the proof of Japanese nationality, if a foreigner can get this right easily? This right can threat the national security because of danger from North Korea. I can state they are a country of terror. They abducted many Japanese. They acknowledged some cases, but we have never forgiven because they have not accepted all the case and they never apologized.
We have to think more the nation and the nationality.

Design’s role

What is design’s role for reconstruction of Japan?
In Korea, the nation is tackling Design education vigorously.
In China, design is translated into strategy.
In Taiwan, design is translated into resource.
Japan clearly have got behind. It is obvious that design is a philosophy including science, engineering, economics and politics. Japan needs to think more about design.
Last of all, I want to introduce my professor’s word.
He translated design into “思いやり”. I think this word completely express Japanese future’s attitude.
